Liverpool 1-1 Everton

Liverpool 1-1 Everton

Everton's Tim Cahill
Cahill's goal ensured Liverpool trail Manchester United on goal difference

Tim Cahill headed a late Everton equaliser to deny Liverpool the chance to move top of the Premier League in a frantic Merseyside derby at Anfield.

A superb 30-yard strike from captain Steven Gerrard in the 68th minute had given Liverpool the lead.

But with three minutes remaining, Yossi Benayoun conceded a needless free-kick and an unmarked Cahill stooped to head in a fine Mikael Arteta delivery.

Earlier, Fernando Torres missed a great chance to give Liverpool the lead.

Liverpool had been within minutes of regaining top spot in the Premier League table from Manchester United, but Cahill's late intervention means the Reds have to settle for second place on goal difference.
